The proprietor, Euryn Dyfed, worked for over 15 years in the old Welsh shop in Llanelli. When that closed in April 2000, Euryn decided to venture out on his own and open a brand new Welsh shop in the town and in May 2000 Llyfrau’r Ddraig opened its doors. After all, we couldn’t leave Sosban Town without a Welsh Shop for long!
However, Euryn is an oddity in the world of Welsh book shops. He originates from Newcastle upon Tyne – the Celtic Hen Ogledd (Old North) and he has learned Welsh.
In his own words: “I learnt Welsh from the only book that was available in Newcastle Central Library; the language of the old Bible more or less. No one else wanted to borrow it so I had it on permanent loan. After discovering Pobl y Cwm on BBC Northeast at lunch time, I listened, and listened, and listened and thought that I hadn’t learned Welsh at all. On moving to Llanelli in 1975 I attended night classes to get accustomed to the way local people used the language. This got me interested in language in general and I went on to do a BA degree in Welsh through the medium of Welsh, concentrating on the linguistic/history side. I also learnt Irish and Breton whilst in college (Aberystwyth). I am now fully fluent, thinking in Welsh and I even have to ask friends: 'What is . . . IN ENGLISH?' The interest in dialect continues and with an interest in Welsh Literature, I’m very lucky to be working with books.”
Now well established, the shop is going from strength to strength. We have had a number of special events, including author signings, a visit by Sali Mali and the local group Baldande playing a live set.
If ever you are in Llanelli, remember to call in to see us.
